Getting Buffed by the Bluffs
Encinitas might as well have been the birthplace of self-realization with its healthy population of veggie cafes and yoga studios. So it's no surprise that Bergamot Spa has made its home on Highway 101. Tucked among seaside inns, it boasts a lush garden setting, yet its unassuming coziness gives it a decidedly Encinitan aura. A facial filled with aromatic rubs makes the skin so soft to the touch, it's nearly unrecognizable. And the massage? Transcendant. Natalie Maisel, a lively Texan, gives a no-nonsense kneading that will have you walking tall once it's done. The other delights were in the smaller details - from the bamboo ladders (upon which guests hang their clothes) to the floating orchids placed beneath the massage table face-rests.
Spa Combines New Age with Old School
"There is a hidden oasis in Leucadia; a fairyland of the sensual and sublime. A few steps off Highway 101 and through the back gate bring you into a garden with a koi pond, an open air Fijian style gazebo and tiny, private wood bungalows"
The main building is a cozy space decorated in trendy Indonesian style tropical furniture. Inside a woman lazes in a seagrass chair while soaking her feet in a Bainese wooden bowl filled with perfumed water and floating orchids.
